I Am Successful…

“Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.” ~Booker T. Washington

From the mental anguish and physical toll of slavery, to the present day civil injustices of racial profiling and employment discrimination, black men have endured harsh and unimaginable treatment; however, they’ve managed to persevere against all odds.

The history of the black man in America is one filled with uncertainty, turmoil, and speculation; yet, it encompasses and epitomizes strength, determination, and sacrifice.  Black men stare adversity in its face and stand toe-to-toe with obstacles.

Although success for many may be measured solely through monetary gain, the black man’s definition of success has always been multi-faceted. Family, brotherhood, spirituality, and community involvement among other things, have been the barometer for measuring one’s own personal success.

Here, II Magazine has featured black men from all walks of life who have each taken their fate into their own hands and defined what makes them successful. From shaming the naysayers to relying on faith; and from attaining personal happiness to giving back to others, the men here know their worth and own it!  We salute you!
