UNCONVENTIONAL BEAUTY

We all have that one thing that we would change about ourselves physically, and if you say you don’t, then you’re lying. Whether it’s smoother skin or a taller physique, we all secretly desire some form of improvement. But why? What fuels the desire to want to renovate our natural beauty? What makes women dye their hair to cover their gray? The answer is conventional beauty.

The goal is to do your best to achieve a look similar to “her” or “him.”  It’s more common to see a young, thin, olive toned model on major campaigns than it is to see any other demographic. Fortunately, there is a growing demand to have models variations.  Something different than “her” or “him.”

French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier explains why he chooses to use unconventional looking models in his shows by saying, “There is not only one kind of beauty.” It’s important that the fashion industry resembles the culture it represents, which is full of diversity and tons of unconventional beauty. More than likely, if you’re reading this, YOU are an unconventional beauty too.

Using models with unconventional beauty, in my opinion,is a marketing strategy used by agencies and fashion designers to get people talking. When something is unusual, people talk. Or maybe it’s done to make their products more relatable to the average consumer in an effort to have them purchase the designer’s product.Whatever the intention, the result is that society is redefining beauty.

The conventional and modern definition of beauty is simply unrealistic and uncommon for the average person. The ability to diversify beauty and have all images present in the fashion industry is a healthy way to shape the subjective view of what men and women find beautiful. The objective isn’t to eliminate the beautiful, thin, six feet tall super model, but to add more diversity on the runways and magazine covers. Beauty has always been, and always will be, subjective, but our opinion on what we find beautiful is primarily influenced by our surroundings and media exposure.

This trend affects you, whether you know it or not. Think about it… Being approached at the bar, or heck, even the grocery store is a clear indicator that someone finds you attractive. When the definition of beauty is diversified, it may lead to the possibility of you and your single friends being attractive to more people, which means more drinks for you. Or maybe even your five-year-old child may grow up having high self-esteem. When unconventional beauty is popular, we all win!
