MY FAREWELL TO LUXURY
Opulence. Embellishment. Imaginative. Disappearing.
Decadence. Superior. Unattainable.
With the rise of new wealth throughout the world, luxury has somehow become less luxe and as a consequence less inspiring. The luxury market has begun to give way to impatient consumers, whose insatiable and unrefined consumption has begun to erode the mystic of luxury sector. Designers have learned to design, not for the few but for the many and in many cases this has diminished the ‘it’ factor.
The luxury houses used to lead fashion and now under the pressure of fast fashion, many times they seem to follow or gasp, lift inspiration (aka copy) from one another or cool non-luxe brands. It’s leaving the true fashion crowd -those that studied every season and knew every romanticized story behind a designer and their collection – wanting in a major way. Yes, there are many beautiful things today, but it’s a rarity to yearn for them any more, why? Because designing for everyone is not designing it is product development. True design gets lusted after as well as criticized.
It doesn’t speak to everyone and it surely does not get delivered the next week into stores, why? Because it is worth waiting for, dreaming about in detail, from what you’re going to look like wearing it and who will be there with you, to the setting and the plot.
Luxury fashion is supposed to make you wait, not cater to whims of the masses. When the greats are gone we will be left with corporations, let by what was great last year not what could be this year. The greats have been visionaries that tell you what you want before you even know, but now I fear the tables have turned and the holy grail of the fashion industry, our pillar brands are losing their role as director -where will we go from here?
