Natural State of Mind
______________________________________________________
Gorgeous uninhibited locks
Flowing in the autumn breeze
So enchanting and harmonious
Your hair moves with absolute ease
Free and spontaneous
Cascading in different directions
Strands of perfection
Even if blatantly disheveled
Powerful because it is
Unaltered, unchanged
You don’t carry an umbrella
Because you don’t care if it rains
You find it liberating to walk
With raindrops falling on your face
Or to feel the sweat cool your scalp
After you’ve run a 5k
Hair coming out of the root
In its accurate texture
As designed by God
No need to try and make it ‘better’
Content in your hair just as you are
Pleased in your skin
Your beauty is palpable
Your confidence is undeniable
Chaotic styles just as breath taking as
Impeccably interwoven braids
Whether washing and going
Or stretching or blowing
Or wearing tapered fades
You are a rockstar
Your hair is your guitar
Constantly strumming it with your fingers
So in love with who you are
Your mane is so precious
You’ve given her a name
She personifies your joy
She is not average or mundane
She’s electric
And so are you
Your steps are energetic
Your beauty beyond magnetic
You enjoy your individuality
And celebrate that we don’t all make the same choice
No superiority complex exists
No judgment or remorse
Your natural journey hasn’t been easy
It’s taken patience and courage
There have been many who stare and whisper
And others who clearly discourage
But you welcome the questions
You are comfortable with the stares
Some call it nappy, kinky, wavy, unruly
But you, you just call it your hair

This poem right here is beyond inspirational, and accurately captures the spirit of the movement many women have embraced in nurturing our natural hair!
What a wonderful celebration of ourselves and our hair…our NATURAL GOD-GIVEN hair in all it’s beauty! Anike has been like a little sister to me since she was ten years old and she has ALWAYS had a beautiful spirit and gorgeous hair.
This piece is everything! Love each look!
Creativity and movement in this work is outstanding. Tears rolled as I read this poem and viewed photos. I will share this website with family, friends, coworkers and others I come in contact with. I see your work going mainstream. Much success to Henry Edwards, II and his team.
